Who do I contact if I need to remove a creditor from my credit report?

October 13th, 2008
HALO SPARTAN asked:

My mom and I have the same name and their is something on my credit report that is really hers. I’m trying to refinance my car and I can’t get the loan approved because of that one thing from my mom. They said I can pay someone to fix it but isn’t there a way to contact the credit report bureau myself?

You have to contact the creditor to get it removed. Or your mom may have to contact them.

Never pay someone to “fix” it. Contact whichever credit bureau provided the report directly. You will probably want to contact the other two credit bureaus as well to be safe.

Go to freecreditreport.com and follow the instructions to dispute something there.

Yes you need to call them. There are three major credit bureau’s Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Just go to there website and it will have information on how to contact them and dispute the charge. Usually it’s just a letter, then they dispute it with the creditor and sometimes the creditor doesn’t respond fast enough so it gets removed automatically. However if the creditor does respond than you will need to provide information proving that this was not you but in fact your mother.

There are 3 credit reporting services: Transunion, Equifax and Experian.
The bad news is that it is very hard to call or e-mail them and talk to a human being without having a copy of your credit report in hand.
Get a free copy of your credit report (do you know which company has the error?), everyone is entitled to one free credit report from all 3 companies each year. You will need your report number to communicate with them.
It can be very frustrating but hopefully the error will be fixed.

Contact any of the three main credit rating companies – Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. They are required by law to place an ‘explanation’ on your file if you tell them something is wrong – but they are not required to remove it (though they may if you convince them of the mistake).

You can get a free (mandated by the Federal Government) credit report once a year from each agency – so you can get a free one every four months by selecting one company at a time. To apply go to:

Note this is FREE; the company that calls itself freecreditreport.com does NOT give free credit reports; you must sign up for a fee-based service to get the report, which is then INCLUDED (not free) with your membership.

You don’t have to pay someone to do this. Dispute the item directly with the credit bureau. Indicate the account is your mother’s.
